To compare dry ice cleaning vs. manual cleaning, price the complete job against the same acceptance criteria. An hourly crew rate and an employee’s hourly wage describe different things. Start with the work each option includes, then record the people, time, materials, and facility resources required.
Define one result for both methods
Choose a specific asset and deposit. State the surfaces included, material to retain, and condition required at inspection. Compare methods only after both have a credible route to that result. A faster pass that leaves unacceptable residue is an incomplete comparison.
Record the current method before changing it: who does the work, what is dismantled, which consumables are used, and when the asset returns to service. For a new application, arrange a representative test before treating proposed production rates as a budget.
Build a worksheet for the whole job

Keep labor hours and elapsed downtime separate
Record both the clock time and the combined hours worked by everyone involved. If several people work simultaneously, their labor hours add together while the elapsed time follows the schedule. Include customer staff supporting a contractor as well as the contractor’s crew.
For your internal comparison, use a consistently defined loaded labor cost. Note whether an apparent saving reduces paid overtime, frees existing employees for another task, or removes an outside expense. These are different outcomes and should have separate entries.

Assign a careful value to recovered production time
Ask the production and finance teams whether earlier availability could create usable output. Check demand, staffing, downstream capacity, and whether other maintenance tasks still control the restart. Keep any proposed production benefit separate from direct cleaning costs.
If you value additional output, document the method and assumptions with your finance team. Do not present gross sales per hour as profit or count the same labor saving twice. Where the opportunity is uncertain, show the cost comparison both with and without it.
Measure the dry ice side on your application

Record replenishment, repositioning, and collection during the trial, not just the most effective cleaning pass. If the proposed method needs a different level of access or a second cleaning step, include that work in the comparison.
Make the decision from a range, then review it
Build a base case from observed results and a more demanding case for heavier deposits, limited access, or delays. Identify which inputs change the decision. For recurring work, revisit the comparison after completed jobs and use those observations when discussing the next maintenance interval.
A small, accessible manual task may be a different purchasing decision from a recurring equipment-cleaning shutdown. Let the defined work and measured costs guide the choice.
