Assess dry ice blasting safety at your facility

Dry ice releases carbon dioxide gas. Site-specific ventilation and monitoring requirements must be evaluated before work, particularly in enclosed spaces and low areas. A particulate filter does not protect against carbon dioxide exposure.

Coordinate equipment and air supply

Identify the asset’s isolation procedure, access points, sensitive components, and manufacturer restrictions. Compressed-air capacity and quality must suit the selected equipment and application.

Do not assume equipment can be cleaned while energized or running. Required isolation and authorization depend on the asset and the facility’s procedures.

Plan exposure controls and cleanup

The work plan should address flying debris, noise, cold-contact hazards, nearby personnel, and the hazards of the removed contamination. Determine appropriate personal protection, separation, containment, collection, and disposal for the actual job.

Share the equipment location, access route, surrounding operations, and site contact responsible for the work area. Identify the residue and provide relevant product or safety data sheets where available. Include the proposed work window and any facility permits or contractor onboarding requirements.

For a planned shutdown, coordinate the cleaning sequence with other trades and the facility inspection team. Define who prepares the equipment and who authorizes its return to service. Include these responsibilities in the project review so the proposed work can be assessed against site conditions.
