Start with what you want to preserve

A classic car cleaning project should begin with a clear distinction between unwanted buildup and the original material you want to retain. Tell us whether the goal is preservation, preparation for restoration, or presentation of an existing restoration.

Identify original paint, factory markings, identification labels, undercoating, and earlier repairs before selecting the cleaning areas. Include photographs and any restoration notes that help explain the car’s current condition.

Review the underside and engine bay

Dry ice cleaning can be considered for suitable road grime, grease, and selected protective deposits on accessible underbody and engine-bay surfaces. Its settings can be adjusted to the application, but deteriorated finishes and fragile details require particular care.

An initial test provides a reference for the proposed result. Review the exposed surface as well as the removed deposit before expanding the work. A clean-looking result alone is not a reason to continue across a fragile finish.

Agree on the restoration boundary

Choose the components and surfaces included in the cleaning scope, the areas to exclude, and the desired handover condition. Decide whether protective coatings should remain or whether a particular deposit needs a separate removal assessment.

Dry ice cleaning is a cleaning stage within a restoration project. It does not rebuild mechanical components, replace missing metal, correct pitted corrosion, or provide bodywork and repainting. Loose coatings may detach from deteriorated areas; preserving every existing finish cannot be assumed.

Plan access with the owner or restoration shop

Provide the year, make, model, project location, and current stage of restoration. Identify available lift access and whether panels, wheels, or other components are already removed. Any disassembly, reassembly, and follow-on work should have an agreed responsible party.

For a collection or several vehicles, describe each vehicle separately. Similar models can have different coatings, repairs, and deposit conditions, so one vehicle’s cleaning scope should not automatically be applied to another.
