Renting a Dry Ice Blaster vs Hiring a Crew
Compare dry ice blaster rental with hiring a crew. Include compressed air, pellet loss, training, labor, delivery, and cleanup using your actual project quotes.
Precision Dry Ice Cleaning provides operated cleaning services and does not rent equipment. If you are comparing a dry ice blaster rental with hiring a crew, compare the complete cost and responsibilities for the same job.
For a one-off project, ask whether your team has the equipment knowledge, air supply, dry ice logistics, and time to prepare and run the work. An operated service is worth comparing when those tasks would otherwise fall to people already responsible for production or maintenance.
Build a complete dry ice blaster rental budget
| Cost or responsibility | Include in the comparison |
|---|---|
| Blaster and accessories | Rental period, approved nozzles, hoses, return terms, and damage charges. |
| Compressed air | Required flow and pressure, compressor rental, air treatment, fuel, and delivery. |
| Dry ice | Quoted price, usable quantity, storage loss, delivery, and container charges. |
| Operator and support labor | Training, trial, setup, blasting, cleanup, collection, and return time. |
| Site controls | Ventilation, monitoring, PPE, isolation, access equipment, and residue handling. |
| The work window | Downtime or internal labor costs, using the same basis for both options. |
Check compressed air for the actual machine and nozzle
Match the rental unit’s air-flow and pressure requirements with the supply available at the point of use. Obtain the requirements from the rental supplier and account for the selected nozzle, hose arrangement, and any other plant demand.
The Cold Jet FAQ gives different air requirements for different systems and notes that the application matters. A 185 CFM compressor is not a universal specification. Confirm the full setup before ordering the blaster.
Budget for usable dry ice
Use the supplier’s quote and the expected consumption from the selected equipment and trial. Include the delivery schedule, storage container, and expected loss between delivery and use. However, you cannot blast with dry ice that has already sublimated.
For a planning calculation, usable pounds equal the purchase quantity multiplied by the fraction expected to remain. If you need 400 usable pounds and assume 10% total loss, the calculated purchase quantity is 400 ÷ 0.90, or about 444.4 pounds. This is an illustrative calculation, not a recommended order or a measured loss rate.
Also ask the supplier about delivery increments and add any operating reserve separately. Record whether the loss assumption covers storage only or the entire interval before the ice is used.
Allow training time for dry ice blaster rental
Next, ask what training the rental provider supplies and which tasks remain with your team. Count the time needed to review the machine, prepare the site, test the surface, and learn the approved settings.
Identify who handles the site controls, equipment isolation, and residue collection. However, a rental checkout demonstration does not approve every material or work environment.
Dry ice blaster rental or an operated crew
Consider a rental when your trained team already has an approved process, suitable air, reliable dry ice supply, and enough repeat work to use the equipment productively. Confirm availability and the support included with the rental.
Consider an operated crew when the task is occasional, your team is committed elsewhere, or you want a defined cleaning scope and an identified party responsible for its execution. Confirm what the service quote includes rather than assuming every site cost is covered.
Neither route is automatically cheaper. Compare the same surfaces, preparation, work window, cleanup, and handback criteria. Price a representative trial when the cleaning response is uncertain.
Use a project cost worksheet
The worksheet below starts blank. First, enter current supplier quotes and your project assumptions. A zero should mean a cost has been checked and is not applicable, not that it was overlooked.
The calculation covers the costs entered. Add taxes, overtime, internal downtime, disposal, delivery, and any other excluded items to the appropriate allowances. Compare only quotes with equivalent scope.

PROJECT COST WORKSHEET
Compare the costs you will actually pay.
All values start blank. Enter USD amounts for the whole project. This estimates the costs entered; it does not predict cleaning time, results, or rental availability.
