CLEANING APPLICATION

Composite tool cleaning with dry ice

Composite tool cleaning with dry ice for selected resin, release-agent, and tape residue. Review tool materials, surface finishes, testing, and work scope.

Composite tool cleaning starts with the surface system

Identify the tool material, surface coating, release system, and residue before defining a cleaning scope. A steel or aluminum tool and a composite-faced tool should not be treated as interchangeable.

Dry ice blasting is used for selected release agents, resin deposits, and production residue on composite tooling. Adhesion, cure condition, surface finish, and access affect the suitability of a specific application.

Describe the process and the deposit

Include the manufacturing process, resin or compound, release agent, and any tape or adhesive involved. Photograph the deposit boundaries and show the surrounding surface.

Identify parting lines, textured areas, polished surfaces, inserts, and any previously repaired areas. State whether the goal is cleaning before inspection, preparation for a release-system change, or a recurring maintenance task.

Agree on a test that represents the tool

Select a small area with the actual deposit and finish. Define the residue to remove, the surface condition to preserve, and the inspection method. Record any areas that should remain untouched.

If the work is part of a release-system change, specify which layer is intended to remain or be removed. Do not assume every coating or release layer should be stripped.

Coordinate handling and production handback

Describe how the tool is supported, moved, and accessed. Confirm responsibility for fixtures, protection of adjacent surfaces, equipment isolation, and collection of removed material.

Keep cleaning acceptance distinct from repair, dimensional inspection, release-agent reapplication, and the facility’s return-to-production checks. Include those responsibilities in the project sequence.

Use the plastics and composites guide for the wider production scope and adhesive residue removal for a deposit-specific review.

For repeat tooling work, review maintenance planning and pricing and project scope. Request a representative test with the tool and process details.
