Dry Ice Blasting vs. Sandblasting

Compare dry ice blasting and sandblasting for residue, rust, coatings, surface profile, cleanup, and the finish your project needs.

To compare dry ice blasting vs sandblasting, start with the surface you need at handback. Dry ice may suit deposit removal while retaining the underlying surface. However, abrasive blasting deserves review when the specification calls for bonded corrosion removal or a profile for a new coating.

Dry ice blasting vs sandblasting: the main difference

Dry ice uses solid CO₂ propelled by compressed air; abrasive blasting uses selected grit to cut or abrade the surface. The dry ice becomes gas, while the crew must recover spent grit with the removed material. This is the basic process distinction described in Cold Jet’s manufacturer comparison. “Sandblasting” does not identify the actual abrasive: ask which media the proposal specifies.

When abrasive blasting may be the better fit

If a fabrication drawing or coating supplier calls for a particular anchor profile, start there. Removing oily buildup and producing a coating-ready steel surface are separate outcomes. However, a dry ice cleaning test does not prove coating readiness. Read the dedicated guides to rust removal and paint removal before comparing bids.

Compare the complete job: dry ice blasting vs sandblasting

  • Give both bidders the same substrate, coating condition, access limits, and acceptance criteria.
  • Include isolation, masking, disassembly, containment, residue collection, and inspection in the scope.
  • Price any additional preparation needed after cleaning. A low cleaning price is not a complete coating-preparation price.

Define the test before choosing

For a machine housing, ask whether cleaning can remove buildup without disturbing sound paint. In contrast, a corroded steel part may need a defined preparation standard. Photograph the trial area before and after, inspect the retained surface, and agree what happens if the result falls short.
