APPLICATION GUIDANCE
Dry Ice Blasting vs. Walnut Shell Blasting
Compare dry ice blasting with walnut shell media for deposits and coatings. Review surface sensitivity, retained media, access, and test criteria.
Compare dry ice blasting vs walnut shell blasting by the exact substrate, deposit, settings, and required finish. Walnut shell is a soft abrasive, while dry ice becomes gas. However, neither description establishes suitability for a delicate part or historic surface.
Dry ice blasting vs walnut shell blasting: the media
Kramer Industries describes walnut shell grit as angular, ground shell media supplied in different grades for cleaning and coating-removal applications. “Soft abrasive” is relative: it is not a promise that every coating, patina, wood grain, or precision feature will be unchanged.
| Decision | Dry ice blasting | Walnut shell blasting |
|---|---|---|
| Media remaining after cleaning | Dry ice becomes gas; detached residue still needs collection. | Shell media and detached residue need collection. |
| Fragile or valued surface | Test for changes to finish, texture, and attached details. | Test the proposed grade and settings for the same changes. |
| Openings and assemblies | Protect openings from displaced contamination. | Assess both contamination and retained shell media. |
| Reuse assumptions | Include delivered dry ice and storage timing in planning. | Ask whether media recovery and reuse are appropriate for this particular contamination. |
Choose by the object, not the label
For an accessible, removable part, a controlled cabinet or other contained process may make a media-based approach practical. For a large installed machine, evaluate access, masking, containment, and the ability to retrieve material from recesses. Do not price either job from the exposed square footage alone.
Historic wood needs a separate conversation about the material that must remain. Age marks, tool marks, paint layers, and surface texture may be part of the accepted finish. The wood and timber cleaning guide explains how to frame that review.
Test dry ice blasting vs walnut shell blasting on a sample
- The method removes the deposit to the agreed level.
- The retained surface passes the owner’s inspection under suitable lighting.
- The crew can protect cavities and recover material from the work area.
- The completed method, including any follow-on work, fits the access and downtime available.
Can walnut shell or dry ice remove every coating?
Do not assume a universal result. Provide the coating system and its condition, then inspect a sample before committing the whole job. For firmly bonded paint or a specified abrasive profile, review coating removal limits and the required preparation separately.
