Runway Rubber Removal Methods Compared
Published
Compare runway rubber removal methods, including dry ice, water blasting and chemical cleaning. Review pavement protection, cleanup and friction testing.

Compare runway rubber removal methods against the same project scope. First, start with the pavement, deposit thickness and work window. Then compare how each method handles cleaning, debris recovery and acceptance testing. This gives airport operators and maintenance contractors a clear basis for requesting quotes.
Dry ice blasting, water blasting and chemical cleaning use different cleaning media. Therefore, each proposal should explain the method, the treatment area and the condition required at handback. For the dry process, see runway rubber removal with dry ice blasting.
Compare runway rubber removal methods by project requirement
| Method | Cleaning approach | What to include in the proposal |
|---|---|---|
| Dry ice blasting | Solid CO2 particles and compressed air lift deposits. The dry ice becomes gas. | Surface settings, test-section results, dry ice supply, rubber-debris collection and the planned work rate. |
| Water blasting | High-pressure water jets remove deposits from the pavement. | Water supply, operating settings, recovery arrangements, wastewater handling and clearance time. |
| Chemical cleaning | Cleaning agents loosen deposits under a product-specific procedure. | Product information, pavement compatibility, application time, removal procedure and waste handling. |
Use this table to organize questions for contractors. However, the actual contract determines which runway rubber removal methods are permitted. If the specification names a particular system, resolve any proposed alternative with the purchasing team before pricing production work.
Dry ice blasting and surface preservation
Dry ice blasting uses a soft, non-abrasive medium. It adds no wash water, cleaning solvents or hard blasting grit. As a result, the blasting step has no wash-water drying phase or spent abrasive media to collect. However, removed rubber still needs recovery.
The distinction between the cleaning medium and the removed material matters. Dry ice changes into gas; the rubber deposit remains a cleanup task. Cold Jet’s process guide describes these characteristics and the controls used to adjust cleaning intensity.
For a pavement project, match the settings to the surface and retained finish. In addition, include the test section, nozzle technique and protection of markings in the written scope. The aim is deposit removal with preservation of the underlying pavement.
Also distinguish pavement work from fixture work. If runway lights are included, list the models and manufacturer instructions separately. Therefore, list their inspection requirements and cleaning details in their own line item.
Water blasting and recovery arrangements
FAA pavement guidance describes water jets as a runway-contaminant removal method. The water dislodges deposits and transports the released material. Therefore, ask how the contractor collects that material and handles the water used during cleaning.
First, identify the available water source and delivery arrangements. Next, establish the treatment boundary and recovery route. In addition, include any restrictions affecting drainage, nearby fixtures and adjacent work areas.
Request the demonstrated treatment rate and the complete site-clearance sequence. However, a cleaning rate alone leaves out supply, setup, recovery and inspection. Therefore, compare the total work window on the same basis across proposals.
Chemical cleaning and pavement compatibility
Chemical cleaning uses a product-specific procedure. For this reason, request the proposed agents and their safety data sheets with the method statement. Also ask for the application, dwell and removal instructions.
Before work, identify the pavement material and markings that must remain. Next, set out the handling of spent liquids and rubber residue. Then state who inspects the treatment area after the cleaning procedure is complete.
Keep chemical cleaning and dry ice blasting distinct in the quote. By contrast, a dry ice scope uses CO2 and compressed air. If another cleaning agent or preparation step is proposed, name it as a separate work item.
Test runway rubber removal methods on a measured section
FAA guidance recommends a demonstration area and post-cleaning friction measurements. However, the result cannot be judged solely from a visibly cleaner surface. Read Chapter 4 of FAA AC 150/5320-12C for the underlying maintenance guidance.
For the demonstration, record the pavement condition, deposit level, treatment area and elapsed work time. Include collection and inspection in that record. Also name the testing provider and the required acceptance criteria.
Next, use the demonstration to establish a project-specific work rate. Do not transfer an equipment brochure’s cleaning rate directly into a runway closure plan. Instead, build the proposed schedule around the actual deposit, surface and collection method.
Compare runway rubber removal methods by complete scope
- Confirm that each proposal covers the same treatment area.
- Separate rubber removal from marking removal and fixture cleaning.
- Include mobilization, supplies, setup and debris recovery.
- Name the friction-testing provider and acceptance responsibility.
- State the available closure window and required clearance time.
- Identify optional areas and the process for approving changes.
Then review price alongside the complete work sequence. Also ask for any exclusions that affect the airport’s labor, equipment or testing arrangements. As a result, a written scope makes those responsibilities clear before scheduling.
Plan the next step
For the work sequence, read planning runway rubber removal during an airport closure. For measurement, use the runway rubber buildup and friction-testing guide.
