Dry Ice Blasting vs. Pressure Washing
Compare dry ice blasting and pressure washing for equipment and facilities. Evaluate water tolerance, runoff, residue recovery, and restart requirements.
Compare dry ice blasting vs pressure washing by asking whether water suits the equipment and work area. Pressure washing may suit water-tolerant surfaces with proper washdown and recovery arrangements. However, dry ice deserves review when a water stream would complicate the cleaning scope.
Dry ice blasting vs pressure washing: the cleaning medium
Pressure washing uses a pressurized water stream; dry ice blasting delivers solid CO₂ with compressed air. The water and removed material need a recovery plan, while dry ice becomes gas and the detached contamination still needs collection. Cold Jet’s process comparison describes these different media. Neither process makes the removed contamination disappear.
| Project question | Dry ice blasting | Pressure washing |
|---|---|---|
| Is added water acceptable? | Dry ice does not add a water jet; assess temperature and condensation conditions separately. | Check the surface, seals, electrical protection, and washdown design. |
| How will waste be handled? | Capture and collect loosened contamination. | Plan containment and recovery of water carrying contamination. |
| What is needed to restart? | Inspection, cleanup, reassembly, and owner release still apply. | Include any required drying, inspection, reassembly, and owner release. |
| What determines the price? | Access, deposit response, air supply, dry ice, and cleanup. | Access, deposit response, water supply, recovery, and follow-on work. |
When pressure washing may make sense
An outdoor, water-tolerant asset with established runoff collection is a different project from equipment inside a production line. If an existing washdown process already delivers the required result, compare a dry ice proposal against that actual workflow. There is no reason to assume changing methods will save money.
For a specific sidewalk application, read our dry ice versus hot-water gum removal comparison, then review commercial gum removal service if a dry ice trial fits your site.
Review dry ice blasting vs pressure washing for indoor work
Send photos of the machine and the surrounding area. Also identify nearby product, open bearings, controls, insulation, floor drains, and adjoining work. The cleaning proposal should explain how the crew will isolate protected areas and where the removed material will go.
Dry ice also needs a suitable air and CO₂ control plan; “dry” does not remove the need for ventilation review. Use the facility requirements guide to prepare the site discussion.
Will dry ice eliminate downtime?
Do not assume it will. A useful comparison includes the whole shutdown window: isolation, access, cleaning, inspection, restoration, and release. Ask both providers to price and schedule the same handback condition.
