Deposits removed from graffiti and protective coatings

We target graffiti paint and identified coating deposits on specified walls or hard surfaces. Sacrificial layers, retained coatings and the substrate have separate endpoints; absorbed pigment and remaining shadows are recorded against the approved sample.

Operational benefits

  • Remove specified deposits without flooding the area with wash water.
  • Define the handoff for coating renewal or restoration.
  • Avoid adding abrasive grit to cleanup around occupied areas.

Non-toxic dry ice and eco-friendly cleaning benefits

Dry ice is a non-toxic cleaning medium. Dry ice blasting cleans with solid CO₂ and compressed air without detergents, solvents, wash water or added abrasive grit. Its environmental benefits include no chemical rinse water and no spent blasting media from the blasting step.

Food-grade dry ice is a food-safe cleaning medium used for food-processing equipment. Food-facility cleaning still follows the site’s sanitation, allergen-control and equipment-release procedures.

The dry ice turns into gas. Removed deposits still require collection, and ventilation and protective equipment remain part of the cleaning setup.

Define the dry ice graffiti removal objective

  • Remove graffiti while retaining the existing paint, masonry face, or protective finish.
  • Strip a sacrificial anti-graffiti layer as part of the coating supplier’s maintenance process.
  • Prepare for a new finish by removing an old protective coating.

These are different outcomes. Next, tell us whether the anti-graffiti system is permanent or sacrificial, provide its product data, and identify who will inspect or renew it. Do not substitute dry ice for the coating manufacturer’s cleaning instructions without a reviewed test.

What the trial should establish

Use an owner-approved sample area to set paint-removal and retained-finish criteria. Check surface texture, remaining shadows and adjacent stone, mortar, metal or glazing separately.

For historic masonry, the National Park Service’s cleaning guidance emphasizes testing and choosing the gentlest effective approach. That is preservation guidance, not an endorsement of dry ice for a particular building. Coordinate the acceptance standard with the project’s preservation professional.

Where the method may fall short

If the trial cannot achieve the required result without changing the retained surface, stop and review alternatives. For example, deep staining, a strongly bonded coating, or a deteriorated substrate may prevent the requested appearance. The paint-removal guide explains why cleaning and full coating removal are separate scopes.

Plan the occupied-site work

Identify pedestrian routes, vehicles, adjacent property, sensitive finishes, access equipment, and a contained work area. Then assign collection and disposal of the removed material. For municipal or transit work, include site access and scheduling requirements in the initial request.

Finally, acceptance should describe an achievable finish under agreed viewing conditions. However, do not assume a cleaned patch will match surrounding weathered material or that removal includes a replacement protective coating.
